When a model loves herself and enjoys the process of shooting, she liberates herself, every gesture and movement acquires meaning, looks organic and everything turns out just fine in the frame. And expressiveness will help to give small make-up tricks, the right choice of hairstyles, clothes, and most importantly - good angles and chiaroscuro. By the way, even top models prefer to be photographed in only two or three good angles, so if in some position you do not look very attractive, do not rush to get upset - you will certainly find your own pose.

  • Less glitter. In order not to get a daub instead of a high-quality picture, the make-up for shooting should be without shine, matte. You can't do without mattifying powder! Even if your skin is not oily, it can shine in the photo. A little gloss can be applied only to the middle of the lips to make them fuller. But only a little! After all, you don’t need a picture in which nothing else is visible except for the lips. Refuse the varnish with sparkles, which in the photo will turn into the usual "dandruff".
  • We give the face "sculpture". In order for the face in the photo not to turn out flat and featureless, it must be made more expressive and embossed. To do this, with a matte brown-beige blush or dark powder, slightly darken the cheekbones, emphasize the line of the chin and highlight the wings of the nose.

1. Pay attention to the background

Get to know your subject

Use Light Effectively


  • Turn off the camera flash: it makes the subject "flat" and inexpressive. If the light is placed at the same angle as the lens, it hides natural shadows and the effect from your beautiful camera will be no more than from a smartphone. No, phones are capable of taking great pictures, but grab one and you'll see the difference.
  • Work on your white balance. If you shoot indoors without a flash, your skin may start to glow orange. Mastering the white balance is necessary to cope with this problem and significantly improve the quality of your work.
  • Know how and where the light comes from. Before shooting, look around, find natural sources. Avoid shooting with light directly behind you - the picture will be dull. Better if it falls at an angle. On the street, the same rule applies - do not let the sun shine directly on the face of the model.
  • Use the "golden hours" - twice a day, one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset. At these moments, shadows become interesting, faces are softly highlighted, portraits and landscapes are very beautiful.
  • Avoid harsh light: the sun can be too harsh. Try to shoot in the shadows - this will give the portrait a new meaning.

  • Work on a flash photo in bright light to soften the direct midday sun. Subjects will be softly highlighted and the picture will be pleasant to look at.
  • Work on the light: try changing the position of the model, the location of the shadows.

Compose your photo

  • Try to make a "frame" inside the frame - it can be a doorway, a window, an arch. They add depth to the picture, help to tell more about the photo, "lead" the viewer's eye.
  • Think about what you want to tell the audience - what message should the picture carry. Use visual tools - lines, different angles.
  • Get closer: if you stand too far from the "subject", the details will become indistinguishable. Start from a distance of about three meters, and then move away or vice versa, get closer to better express the meaning of the picture.
  • Focus clearly on the object: it must attract attention and you need the viewer's eye to move towards it. Use landscape accents, people - for example, as a frame for the main character. To easily work on a composition, find a good guide for it.

  • Do not be lazy to look for angles: most people take pictures looking straight ahead. There are many ways to make the shot better - for example, change the angle by standing on a ladder, a chair, kneeling down. Great photos can be taken even lying on your stomach.
  • Zoom in with your feet instead of zooming in.
  • Don't forget about the background - it's as much a part of the picture as the main subject. It should not be cluttered and should add meaning to the shot.
  • Make sure that there is no red-eye in the photo - turn on the appropriate function, add light to the room, ask the models not to look directly at the camera.
  • Use natural lines and shapes - buildings, interior furnishings, architectural elements (doorways, stairs).

  • Work with the foreground without forgetting other "dimensions". For example, an object closer to the camera will look larger, this will be emphasized by small objects in the background. On the contrary, the small size of the object in the depth of the composition "reinforces" the background objects in the foreground.
  • Once again, come closer. Remember the classic expression: if the photo is not too good, then you did not get close enough. So, besides, you can detail the faces.
  • You don't have to look directly at the LCD screen after taking a picture: you might miss important points. Try to break this bad habit.
  • If you put watermarks on the photo, do not be zealous - they distract from the picture.
  • Always take spare batteries with you when shooting, and charge your batteries as soon as you get home so you're always ready to go.
  • Learn how to work with focal lengths. The less you "juggle" lenses, the more likely you are to get a good shot. A combination of 28 mm and 35 mm is considered successful - try starting with them.
  • Trust not only technology, but also your eyes.
  • Try to be grateful, especially if you're filming in another country. If you were asked to pose, agree - you also use others in your photos.
  • Learn the rule of thirds - the famous three parts or nine rectangles. Empty space in the frame draws attention to the compositional center.
  • "Keep in mind" the lines from the rule of thirds. The object can be on them or between them - pictures taken from different positions are very different.
  • Do not clutter up the frame - simplicity will make the photo more effective, and the abundance of objects will confuse the viewer.
  • Don't take too much equipment, otherwise you will get confused in it. One camera and a pair of lenses is enough.
  • Change perspective and angles by moving vertically and horizontally.
  • Keep an eye on the background - if you are shooting a bride and groom, there should be no trash cans in the background.
  • If you find it difficult to work with bright light, move into the shade - this will help to achieve a different shade and remove the "mottled" lighting.
  • Always take a camera or smartphone with you if you like shooting with it: you can't take a perfect photo with the equipment that lies in the box.

  • Work on your exposure, especially if the sun is behind your subject. It is necessary to eliminate unwanted shadows, to make the face less flat.
  • Shoot well right away. Time is money, try to ensure that the original images are of high quality, and do not have to deal with post-processing for a long time.
